Eco Statement
Street Furniture Australia is conscious of our responsibilities to the environment, and we mitigate the environmental impact of our manufacturing and sales through thoughtful and considerate design and processes.
SFA takes seriously, the environmental considerations of business. By employing recycled materials and timber from managed forests, adopting environmentally sustainable processes, producing many products that are themselves recyclable, we meet our customers' expectation for high-design, high-quality products that may also help them meet their sustainable goals.
SFA's associated design consultancy is a member of the Green Building Council, whose mission is to develop a sustainable property industry for Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions.
SFA's products are designed and engineered to be long lasting outdoor without the use of cleaning chemicals to maintain the finish. We do internal testing of all our products to Australian standards where appropriate. Products are designed to allow replacement of damaged parts. Our longevity and low maintenance goals translate into better care of the earth's resources.
Environmental Smoking Control
Creating an outdoor space to meet this requirement is easy with our seating, tables, chairs, and ash receptacles.
Alternative Transportation, Bicycle Friendly Site Planning
SFA's bicycle stations and hoops provide a suitable means for securing bicycles as recommended by Council Development Control Plans.
Recycled Content products
Metal is the world's most recycled material and is fully recyclable. Our products are primarily formed of steel and aluminium and contain varying levels of recycled material.
SFA is shortly introducing recycled plastic battens, and some of our products have been sold with these battens as a working trial. The plastic battens are both formed from recycled materials, and are recyclable themselves.
Timber
Our jarrah wood comes from Western Australia's forests, managed by the Western Australian government agency, the Forest Products Commission (FPC), in line with internationally accepted principles of sustainable development. The FPC gained ISO 14001 certification in July 2001. All Western Australian Jarrah is now from regrowth forests: harvesting of old growth forests no longer allowed.
Other Materials and Finishes
- Metal products are either polished, powdercoated or painted.
- Polishing has minimal environmental impact.
- Powdercoating with polyester powder is an environmentally friendly metal finishing process that does not contain heavy metals (lead-free), is free of hazardous air pollutants, does not generate hazardous waste and contains less than 1% Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
- Painting is done with iso-cynate free two pack coatings that combine high durability with low toxicity and VOCs.
Manufacturing Initiatives
- Steel and aluminium are sent to local recyclers.
- Scrap timber longer than 600mm is re-used for furniture products. Other scrap timber is used within the factory for various purposes, or given to our employees and local hobbyists for kindling and crafts.
- We collect sawdust from our manufacturing process and distribute to employees and local shops for such uses as mulching and animal companion bedding.
- We give preference to local/regional material suppliers to reduce the environmental impact resulting from transportation.
- We are in compliance with current environmental laws and are committed to remain in compliance.
- We ship our products on recycled skids. Packaging cardboard has a recycled content, and the cardboard is recyclable.
