About SFA

“As we come to measure our success as an urban civilisation, the yardstick that most accurately establishes this is surely the design quality of our public realm. Street furniture, a civic accessory in its own right, is perhaps the best barometer”

- Darrel Conybeare, Co-Founder, Street Furniture Australia

With a background in urban design, architecture, landscape and industrial design, Street Furniture Australia (SFA) is recognised for its world-class conception and manufacturing of urban environment furniture.

The SFA range is truly versatile, ranging from park benches and tables to drink fountains, litter bins, ash receptacles, bollards and bicycle stands. The seating product range demonstrates the variety of SFA’s style, covering traditional hardwood park benches as well as contemporary aluminium and powdercoated designs. The SFA bollard range showcases similar diversity, from the traditional to the ultra-modern.

SFA is strongly committed to design and innovation, and maintains an active research and development programme to ensure product leadership and innovation. All SFA products are manufactured using the highest quality materials and are assembled in-house to ensure quality control and attention to detail.

SFA has grown significantly over the years, establishing a number of offices and factories around Australia. SFA designs are seen all over Australia and internationally, in the USA, Japan, China and South East Asia. Some major installations include Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay, Sydney Olympic Park, Taipei 101 (Taiwan) and the University of California (USA).

HISTORY

Established in 1986, SFA is the oldest street furniture company in Australia.

The idea for the company arose in the late 1970s when architects Darrel Conybeare and William Morrison identified the poor quality of street furniture in Australia. With the belief that a mass-manufacturing approach was the key to product improvement, they began by developing their first seat prototype in a suburban backyard in Sydney. The prototype, now known as the ‘Plaza Seat’, was successfully adopted in 1981 to furnish the City Centre of Canberra, Australia’s capital city. Other products including litter bins and bollards were developed and SFA products became established as the standard in Canberra as well as Sydney.

Some key historical projects include the Queen Victoria Building (bus shelters), Macquarie Street, Circular Quay, Batemans Bay and Kuching Waterfront in Malaysia.
